It was 4:15 AM on Saturday morning when I left my hotel to visit the TRAIN HARD Men’s Club in Santa Barbara, California.

When I got there for the 6 AM workout, one of the guys asked me a question:

“What’s your secret to motivating yourself to get up and come here? How do 100 guys get motivated in Los Gatos to show up every week? How do thousands of men get motivated around the world to get up early on a Saturday and train?”

I thought about that question while we went through the workout, which was awesome by the way. Santa Barbara has a great crew.

And the more I thought about it, the more I realized the word “motivation” was wrong.

We’re not motivating anybody.

What we’re doing is creating opportunities for men to show up and reminding each other of the discipline it takes to keep showing up.

The secret isn’t being the guy who can white-knuckle it, get fired up, set the alarm and find enough motivation to show up one Saturday morning.

It’s becoming the type of person who doesn’t need to rely on motivation.

If you make a commitment, you keep it. If you tell yourself you’re going to do something, you follow through. You become the type of person who does what he says he’s going to do, even when you wake up and don’t feel like doing it.

That’s what I see happening at TRAIN HARD Men’s Clubs around the world.

In the last 30 days, I’ve personally experienced it in New York, Texas, and now Santa Barbara. Different cities. Different groups of men. But the same shared purpose of showing up better for the people they care about.

Nobody is motivated all the time.

But you can be disciplined.

And eventually, showing up stops being something you have to convince yourself to do. It’s just who you are.
