The Power of Quick Action

Recently, I watched a video from Jocko Willink that hit close to home. Jocko’s daughter, also a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) practitioner, shared something powerful she’s learned on the mats:

The best time to get out of a bad position is the moment you get into it.

BJJ has taught me so much, and this is just another valuable lesson that applies so well to real life. In BJJ, you can’t afford to let your opponent settle into a dominant position.

The same goes for real life. When things start heading in the wrong direction, in any area, taking action immediately can make all the difference.

Never Let Complacency Settle In

In fitness, business, relationships, or personal goals, there will be moments when you feel yourself slipping into a “bad position.”

Whether it’s missing a few workouts, letting go of healthy eating habits, or putting off a challenging conversation, it’s easy to let things slide.

But just like on the mats, the longer you wait, the harder it becomes to regain control. The reality is that the longer we let our opponent (our own comfort, procrastination, or doubt) get comfortable, the tougher it is to make a comeback.

Today’s Action Beats Tomorrow’s Plan

It’s human nature to avoid discomfort, but there’s real power in moving now rather than waiting for the “right” time. In every tough situation, delaying action makes it harder to shift momentum back in your favor. The most efficient time to take action is the second you see things heading off course.

Training Builds This Mindset

This is precisely why BJJ, TRAINING HARD, and physical challenges are more than just exercises—they’re about learning to face discomfort head-on. Hard workouts force us to act, adapt, and keep pushing forward, no matter the position we’re in. This mindset goes far beyond the gym, helping us take on whatever life throws our way.

Remember, the toughest battles aren’t won by waiting them out—they’re won by moving forward the moment things get difficult.

The one guarantee in life is that we are all going to be put in “bad positions” sooner or later. How will you react when that happens?
